GATHERING OF CLANS

[ANNUAL CALEDONIAN SPORTS HOLIDAY CROWD AT STRATFORD CONTESTS FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS. PIPING- AND DANCING SKILL. Holiday makers from all parts cf the Taranaki province were assembled at Victoria Park in Stratford yesterday- for the seventh annual Caledonian and athletic sports conducted under the auspices of the Taranaki Provincial Caledonian Association. The gate takings, which amounted approximately to £6O and represented a’crowd j of ’ 1200, were considered highly satisfactory. Ideal weather prevailed and I the day’s programme of piping and dancing” contests and athletic and cycling events was responsible for many excellent performances that aroused enthusiasm to its hignest pitch. All the amateur track, field ana cycling events attracted a large number of entries whilst the professional cycling competitors maintained i< rv high standard. The condition of the track was the subject of -avourania comment and resulted in fast times being recorded. Both piping and danemo- were particularly strong sections' and the judges were- kept busy throughout the afternoon until » • o’clock when the last events weie adjudicated. r Of the championship titles allocated to this gathering there were three—one in the piping section and two m the dancing section. (In piping ch e North Island Strathspey and Vf) championship was won by A. Guild (Blenheim) who was complimented on his fine -performance. In dancing the New Zealand sword dance championship (ladies’) was won Ly Miss Gwen McNaughton (Auckland) and the North Island Highland fling champioa--1 ship (men) by R. Jamieson (Blenheimi, the respective runners-up being i-'® Gladys Smyth (Wellington) and R. W. Haddow (Patea). A gold medal donated by Colonel Rose, of Inverness, Scotland, for most points at the 1 urnkina and Taranaki sports was we a by - M McKenzie (Masterton) and. was perhaps the most treasured trepay on the grounds. Hawera competitors attending the meeting were most successful l'.otli athletic and Caledonian events. In the latter D. Campbell, 13 years of age \ and probably the youngest piper in New Zealand, Avon the piping march for boys under 17 and his brother, i. Campbell, won the Percy Thompson Cup and miniature in the march for B ,clg;ss players. Another Hawera success was in the slow march (trio) in which Pipers R. 4V. Haddow J. Christie and 1. Campbell, all mcnioeis of the Hawera Pipe Band, scored ©0 points, against the Eltham trio s • <-•. The most popular event of the day was the march past of all bands marshalled by Mr. 4V. Mills and the massed band parade, the latter under Drum-Major J. R. Nairn, of Hawera. At the march past the salute was taken by the chief of the- association, Mr. T. W. Smith (Stratford) and by th© respective- chiefs of -societies, Messrs.' R. W. D. Robertson (New ‘Plymouth) and D. G. Smart (Hawera) as* well as the presidents of the respective pipe hands, Messrs. J. L. Laurenson (Hawera), J. L. Campberi (Eltiiam) and A. M. Brown (Auroa). Also in attendance on the parade ground was Mr. P l . Thompson, Aiayoi of Stratford. The order of the parade and the respective tartans of the banUs were as follow: Auroa (McDul) tartan) under Drum-Major 44”. Bell; Haw-era- (McLaugblan tartan), under Drum-Major Nairn; Stratford .(Mclntosh tartan) under Drum-Major K. McKenzie; New Plymouth (McQueen tartan) under Drum-Major P. McKenzie- and Eltham (McKenzie . “Sea forth” tartan) under Drum-Major >. Clements. Each band marched to the tune of “Donald Dbn” and was on thusiastieally applauded. Then followed the massed assembly, the, march m line to the front of the grandstand, being on*© of 'the most colourful displays seen in Stratford for many years. The tune “70th Farewell to Gibraltar” was played and a final selection was given before dismissal. A feature of the sports was the efficient manner in which the officials despatched the events and special leteience was made to the excellent work of the honorary secretary. Mr. 44'. F. Ross. For weeks past Mr. Ross hao devoted a great deal of his time to he preliminary arrangements and on the cTay was ever ready to give assistance and information. , A well-attended dance m the town hall in the evening was entirely successful.
