OPENING AT STRATFORD. provinciaiTassembly. (From Our Own Reporter). STRATFORD, Jan. 26. Fine but overcast weather prevailed at Stratford to-day for the seventh annual Caledonian and athletic sports .under the auspices of the Taranaki Provincial Caledonian Sports Association. The attendance was estimated at 1000 visitors, including the provincial chief, Mr. T. W. Smith, of Strafford, and Chieftains R. W. D. Robertson (New Plymouth Society). D. G. Smart ■(■Ha.wei’a~ Society), J. B. Laurenson (Hawera Pipe Band), J. L. Campbell (Eiltiiam Pipe Band), A. M. Brown (Apron Pipe Band). The principal events during the afternoon were the grand . parade of massed bands, the New Zealand chnmpifmaliipl ladies’ sword dance, the North Island championship men’s highland fling and the North Island piping 'championship in strathspey and reel.
