FREE STATE ELECTIONS
COMMENCEMENT OF COUNT DELAY IN FINAL FIGURES PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION. ... EXTENSIVE .CHECK REQUIRED. v United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) Received 2.45 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Jan, 25. The Free State elections count has commenced, but owing to the intricacies due to proportional representation tne final figures will not be available until late on Friday or Saturday. The poll averages 80 per cent, of 'the rolls compared with 75 last year. Few first preferences will be decisive, some contests needing a dozen successive counts. Impersonations were widespread, but rowdyism was nothing unusual. The military occasionally were called on to assist the police. The Army of Comrades Association used tyre levers and spanners against armed opponents at Ballyduff and a youth was shot in th'e leg. The soldiers threatened to use tear gas and quelled a disturbance in Monaghan. The unopposed candidate's are Professors Thuft and Alton and iSir Jas Craig (Independents, Dublin University)! and the Speaker Mr Fahey.
Fianna Fail members elected include Mr Maguire, Mrs Concannon (the woman novelist), and Mr McGilligan. A severe blow was the defeat of the Cosgraveite, the ex-Speaker, Mr Hayes. Do Valeraites are expected at. least to return the Dublin seats.
Mr Cosgravo is polling well in Cork. Mr Do Valera is leading for Clare.
