The Whakamara School Cricket Club was formed in March, 1900, and it was recorded at the time that the roads were a “sea of mud.” * ft * * * “As it was now getting late a second attack was made on the viands and it was as good as a play to see how quickly the buns and cakes disappeared when washed down with lemon and raspberry syrup.”—Extract from a report appearing in the “Hawexa 'Star” in connection with' a school picnic in 1597. Tt is descriptive of the simple nature of the old-time, picnics which in those days were often the one event of the year.
