Members of the Hawera Red Cross Society held a most enjoyable social at their rooms in Hawera last evening when first and second year certificates wer© presented to the successful students by the Mayoress (Mrs. E. A. Pacey). Regret was expresed at the abence in hospital of Mr. W. R. Shaw, class instructor, and it was hoped that he would soon be restored to good health.

There wa an attendance of between 30 and 40 members and friends and Mr. E. K: Cameron presided. Concert items were contributed by the following artists with several encore numbers : Pianoforte duet, “Over the Hills and Dales,” Mrs. F. C. Iving and Miss Rodgers ; laughing song, “Massa Johnson,” Mr. J. Dredge; violin solo, “Czardas,” Master Louis Fox; recitation, “The Late; Mf.-s. Henry Hodson,’’ Miss Joan Tonks; instrumental trio, “At the Sign of the ‘Jolly Mariner,’ ” and “Richmond Park,” Master Louis Fox and Misses OLga and Margaret Fox; musical monologues, “Jumpers,” and “Frightened to Death,”' Miss Hall; vocal solo, “Goodbye” and “My Prayer,” Mrs. Gannaway; viola solos, “Lamentation” and “Song Without Woflds,” Miss Margaret Fox: vocal solos, “Oil Illdev Moor” an d“Somewliere a Voice is Calling,” Mr. H. C. A. Fox. A‘ campfire' sketch was given by Mr. Dredge and party of instrumentalists, including Mr. W~ Kelson, who played two popular old songs on bis “musical saw.” Accompaniments during the evening wer© played, by Miss Rodgers and Mrs. L. A.” Taylor. At the conclusion of the concert, Mr. Cameron referred to the success of the Hawera Red Cross class in first aid work during the year. Nineteen candidates presented theniselves for examination and 14 passed, the examiner being Dr. W. F. Buist. “I am isure that this result reflects, tne greatest credit on the class instructor (Mr.- Shaw) and on the ability of the students themselves,” . said Mr. Cameron. “The assistance given by the Red Cross on the field of sport and in other directions in Hawera is appreciated by" all the sports bodies afid various institutions to which our members have been of service. Dr. Buist has mentioned that the Hawera class .sets itself a very liigli standard and the students are to be congratulated on their efficiency. “The speaker said that the medical practitioners of Hawera generously supported the move- , ment and lectures during the year had been given by Dr. Douglas Cameton, practical instruction being undertaken by Ml-. Shaw ad Sister small. With the assistance of Sister Small the" Mayoress presented certificates to the following students: First year.—Misses Florence Walsdoxf, Alice Shannon, Jean Brown; Messrs Ernest Foster, William Straw, Gordon Shaw, Isaac Sorenson,- Alec Sorenson and Frederick Palmer. .Second year.—Mrs Frances Gerrand. Messrs Chas Sharpe, Maurice Shaw, Malmolm Lay and Robert Jonnson The chairman said that Dr Buist in his remarks .on the of each, student, referred to Miss Walsdort s first-aid paper as one of the finest he had ever read. Supper was served under the supervision of Mrs. A. E. Stevens and at , the conclusion of the gathering a vote of thanks to Mrs. Phcey and to the artists was carried by acclamation.
