SAFE DEPOSIT RAIDED
ROBBERS’ £200,000 BOOTY TUNNEL MADE INTO OFFICES SENSATION FOR, CHICAGO 1 (United Press Assoo.hs.tioK—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) CHICAGO, Sept. 5. One of the most sensational and lucrative crimes of recent years has been perpetrated by a group of expert safeopeners. They tunnelled into the real estate offices of Koch and Company and escaped with £200,000 after bolding two families in an adjoining bouse prisoner for over 14 hours on Saturday afternoon on the pretext that they were officers.
The robbers: entered the adjoining house., then casually brought in acetylene torches and other equipment with which they bored through the walls to the vault from the office. There, using the company’s index as a guide, they systematically looted about 350 safety deposit boxes, taking only cash and ignoring securities and jewellery, which they threw about carelessly. Owing to the number of bank failures some time ago residents in the vicinity utilised the boxes to keep their cash.
