FLOOD WATERS FALLING
AVAIKARAPA IMPROVEMENT. .STOCK LOSSES -HEAVY, (By Telegraph—Press Association.) MASTER-TON, Sept. 4._ The flood waters are falling in Southern AVairarapa. This improvement will continue unless there is an unfavourbale change in the weather. Areas in the region of Lake AVairarapa which were threatened at the end of last week are safe for the time being. In the Pirinoa district also the waters are falling, though the subsidence is retarded by congestion of the channels throughout the district and by the stopßanks along tne narrow channel connecting the upper and lower lakes and elsewhere.
Except in outstanding cases already reported there is little specific information about stock losses. Many settlers have saved all their stock, in one ease though only about 100 acres remained uncovered on a property of 2409 acres. The opinion still holds that stock losses in various places will have been heavy. A serious problem will arise in feeding stock, much of which is marooned on small areas. Ultimately there will be a splendid flush of growth on the flooded areas, but where much silt is left there will be no feed for a time. Some hay has been brought in and more will be needed.
Trains • are not yet getting through the Fernside blockage. Passengers were transferred on Saturday, ibut it is expected the line will be clear tomorrow.
