CHILLED MEAT SUPPLY

PROSPECTS FOR AUSTRALIA NEED OF BETTER CATTLE LONDON EXPERT’S OPINION COMPARISON WITH ARGENTINA (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegiaph Copyright.) Received 10.50 a.m. to-day. LONDON, Sept. 4. The “Daily Telegraph’s” agricultural editor, commenting on the Australian attempts, to supply chilled meat, emphasises the deficiency in quality of Australian cattle compared with the, Argentine stock, which has achieved, excellence through the importation of the best pedigree British nulls, which Australia refuses to import through fear of foot and mouth disease.

The writer is of the opinion that at the present rate .of progress the building up of Australian herds will take from 10 to 15 years before the Argentinean standard is reached. Conversely he mentions that Australia and New Zealand, through the importation of British strains, have achieved merit in mutton and lamb unknown to the Argentine.

VESTED INTERESTS AT WORK. OPINION OF MR. HUGHES. Received 11.40 a.m. to-day. LONDON, Sept. 4. Mr. W. M. Hughes, who is staying at Lord Carson’s country home at Kent, told a Press Association representative. that during an extensive tour of Britain ho looked in vain for signs of Australian goods in shop windows. He said that outside of London one could journey all day through fairsized towns without finding a shop selling Australian goods. “Thus in Yorkshire one would never know Australia was part of the .Empire. Australian meat is under a cloud,” he continued, “and interested people see to it that it- is kept well under, whereas New Zealand lamb cuts quite a respectable figure.” He added that vested interests must be fought bv the best men procurable, backed adequately financially.
