OPTIMISM IN FIJI
ADDRESS BY GOVERNOR. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OPENS. r*n> Mi Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.-) SUVA, June 2. . The Legislative Council opened this morning. Tlje Governor’s address was couched in "optimistic terms. It declared that in the main centres of the colony’s principal industry, sugar, along the north-west coast of Viti Levu and Lebasa,- there was a spirit of optimism, in marked contrast to the pessimism in Suva. The address did not agree with the suggested rediiction in toivil service salaries, inferring that if .salaries v ere reduced new taxation must be imposed. It was announced that the Hawaiian Pineapple Company had terminated its growing expei’iments in Fiji. A record crop of rice was anticipated—sufficient for local consumption. The king was returning to Fiji the mace presented by King Cakobau.
