Lady Gregory, playwright and director of the well-known Abbey Theatre Dublin, has died at Galway, aged 80 ■states a British Official Wireless message.

Mr. Neville Chamberlain, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has left London for Harrowgate, the famous British Spa, to undergo treatment for gout, states a British Official Wireless message. He has cancelled all public engagements during the next fortnight. The Rev. H. Whitby James, vicai of _St. Mary’s Church of England parish, Hawera, and Mr. O. D. Arlidge, synodsman, also of Hawera, are attending the annual meeting of Svriod which is being held this week in Wellington.

On the motion of Mr. C. H. Croker, before his Honour, Mr. Justice Reed yesterday afternoon, Mr. L. E. Sowry New Plymouth, was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court. Mr. Campbell Garrett, manager of the Auckland branch of the Bank of New South Wales, has been appointed manager of the King and George Streets branch in Sydney. Mr. F. D. McGovern, assistant manager at Auckland, has been appointed manager, and he will be succeeded by Mr. J. R.. H. Caiman, manager in Fremantle. The Wellington College Old Boys’ Association has decided to erect a bronze tablet at the college as a memorial to the eminent headmaster, the late Mr. J. P. Firth, who died in April, 1931. The association has also decided to erect a sundial in the college grounds in. memory of the late Mr. W. E. Bethune, who was associated with Mr. Firth for many years in movements for the advance of the school. The death occurred at Hamilton on Saturday of Mrs. Mary Hunter, widow of the late Mr. W. L. Hunter, and sister of Mr. L. A. Nolan, New Plymouth. While proceeding to Hamilton on Monday morning to attend the funeral Mr. and Mrs. Nolan met with an accident, their car going over a bank eight or nine miles from Awakino. They escaped injured and were able to proceed on their journey in another car. Their own car was damaged. H. I). Brinsden, a member of the Titirangi Golf Club, who is leaving this week to' join the New Zealand Kirk-Windeyer team leaving for Australia shortly, was farewelled by his club during the week-end. The president, Mr. R. F. Ward, in handing a souvenir to the member, expressed the pleasure of the club in being represented in this important event and wished Mr. Brinsden every success.

The death has occurred In the Grev Hospital of Mr. John Henry Williams at the age of 91. A native of Wales, he had been resident in New Zealand for 63 years, the greater part of which had been spent on the West Coast. Mr. Williams’ wife died 11 years ago, and he is survived by seven sons, Messrs Henry (Nelson Creek), John (Waipawa), Joseph (New Plymouth), David (Napier), Thomas (Auckland), Herbert and James Williams (Greymouth), and five daughters, Mesdames J. O’Brien (Nelson Creek). H. Griffiths (Wallsend), A. Coker (Roiigotea), A. Warner (New Plymouth), and B. Kenison (Huntly). Widely known as one of the pioneers in Press photography in New /Zealand Mr. R. B. Walrond, Jervois Road, Ponsonby, died last week. For 30 years he was on the staff of the “Auckland Star.” He retired three years ago. Mr. Walrond first took up photography as a hobby, and when he began the stand camera and wet plates were the sole equipment of the photographer. He was the first in Auckland to import a hand camera. He exhibited a good deal, and his work was equally acceptable in Britain as in Lew Zealand end Australia. He was one oi the pioneers of the Auckland Camera Club. Mr. Walrond was well known m musical circles. He was one of the last surviving original members of the lvoyal Auckland Choir, formerly known as the Liedertafei. He was also a performing member of the Auckland Choral Society for many years. Mr. Walrond is survived by his wife and one son, Mr. Cecil Walrond, Wallace Street, Ponsonby.
