HOCKEY

SOUTHERN DIVISION GAME’S NOTES BY “STRAND” Another round of the Southern Division hockey competition has been completed and the position of the leading teams remains unchanged, Alhambra and Otakeho leading. The game between Otakeho and Alhambra last Wednesday was a good hard game, although not the best exhibition of hockey one has seen in the, .south. Accidents were frequent. C. Davis and the Rev. Watson suffered injuries that will incapacitate both players for the rest of the season. Alhambra will miss the ltev. Watson in the forwards. He was “skipper” and a good coach. •■Gordon Surgenor again proved himself worthy of a place among the forwards, the only goal being scored off his stick. Otakeho put up a splendid game, on which the team must be complimented. It will be “knocking at the door” for the championship this year. Alhambra did not play up to their usual standard during the first spell, but came with a rush after the interval. The only goal was scored by Corbett. Corbett is playing an improved game this year and has found his place, on the left wing. Iveheiy, in goal, saved his side time and time again, while Ryan at fullback was very safe. Oruiekshanks, also played one of his best games so far this season.

in the match Orientals versus liaweni. there was an easy win for Orientals by six' gtlals to nil. Hawera played a much improved game in comparison with previous exhibitions. Syme’s two corner hits were nicely executed and he was unlucky iii striking Thompson, who made spmndid “saves.” The backs were good, but tiie forwards wanted a lot more coaching. Orientals played a- great game and shortly will tie hard to beat.

Percy, on the left wing, played his best game this season and scored three goafs.

-Pennington, at centre forward, scored Pennington, at centre forward, proved a good general. He knows how to keep his forwards together. Lewis, on the right wing, shows improvements in every game and Duncan, at centre half, played his usual solid game.

Thompson, fullback, played his best game to date and made, some wonderful “saves.”. The Manaia versus Auroa match ended in iVfanaia winning by four goals to one.

Abbott*md Budcl did everything they were asked to do, but better combination is needed in the forwards.

All the Auroa players are coming along nicely and are developing inio a good combination.

The Oriental juniors gave Manaia something to think about last Wednesday, when the teams drew, three all. They were a trifle unlucky not to win. LADIES’ MATCHES. Ramblers beat Tokaora by two goals to one and they thoroughly deserved their win. Miss M. Woolliams scored both goals for Ramblers. Miss Clements, at half, and Miss Goodwin, a.t fullback, are much improved players. The most important match to-morrow 'Wednesday) is between Orientals and Otakeho. MID-WEEK PLAY.
