JULIAN OUP COMPETITION! MATCHES AT NEW PLYMOUTH The Julian Cup soccer competition was advanced a further stage in fine weather on Saturday when Moturoa drew with Caledonians, one goal each, and. Pirates drew witli Albion, one goal each. At Western Park the youthful Moturoa players suffered no inferiority complex against their more experienced opponents and the game kept travelling merrily from one end of the field to the other. Thanks to* the Thomson brothers the Moturoa. forwards were kept supplied consistently, but too often Smith and White, on the wings, lacked support when opportunity came their way. Hills’ goal for Caledonians was from one of those swinging, accurate kicks from the line for which that player has a penchant. Pirates, who outplayed Albion in I some departments of the game, drew with their opponents at Fitzroy, each team scoring one goal in the second half. It was a match of missed opportunities on the part of Pirates. Their weakness lay in their inside forwards, who had two or three almost sure goals presented to them by their wings but were sadly lacking. Black, a new player ,and Longworth, did all that was alsked of them as wing forwards, hut they received no support. Albion played with a little more cohesion, Parkinson being very sound in kicking the ball hard and to some purpose, hut their forward line was more or less disorganised. Pirates’ halves were a hardworking trio and of the fullbacks Anderson for Pirates and Kendall for Albion kicked safely and long. ,

SOUTH TARANAKI. Arrangements so far have not been completed for the opening of the competition series in South Taranaki. Three teams—Stratford, Celtic and Hawera—are available and there is a prospect of a fourth being raised at Patea-. On Saturday the Hawera team journeyed to Stratford and played a “friendly” game. Neither side was at full strength, hut the match was full ] of incident for spectators. Barker (Ha- j wera) enjoyed a field day and scored) five goals, James netting a sixth. Jones and Gib'bs scored for Stratford. Mr Geo. Littlejohn was referee.
