The Governor-General, Lord Bledisloc, and Lady Bledisloe, -who have been visiting Tokaanu and Taupo, returned to Auckland on Saturday night. Their Excellencies will be in residence at Government House for several weeks. Messrs. C. H. Washer and W. McL’Dowie have been appointed to represent the Egmont A. and P. Association at the annual conference of the North Island A. and P, Association, to be held at Palmerston North on June 16. Mr C. Haynes, of the Department of Agriculture, who has been stationed in New Plymouth for some years, has been transfererd to the Hawera office, where lie commenced duty this morning.

Mr. C. W. Cropper, for 22 years secretary of the Australian Jockey Club has died at the age of 22, states a cable forwarded from Sydney yesterday. Mr T. P. Hugbson, sen., Rahotu, has been appointed an honorary ehild welfare officer, states the latest issue of the Gazzette.

Substitute -assistant teachers who commenced duty at the Hawera Main School to-day include Misses !C. Harkness and M. Harley, both infant mistresses.

Mr G. H. Percy, formerly firstassistant at the Eltham State School, commenced duties as first-assistant at the Hawera Main School to-day when the pupils reassembled after the winter vacation. Mr Percy fills the vacancy on the teaching staff caused by the retirement of Mr J. R. Nairn, The death has occurred at Sydney of Dr. Richard Arthur, a pioneer medico, states a cable. He had been a member of the State Assembly since 1904: and was Minister of Health in the Bavin Cabinet. His age was 67 years.

Flying-Officer A. G. Gerrand, late of the Royal Australian Air Force, has been appointed pilot-instructor to the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast Aero Club, and leaves Sydney by the Marama on May 27 to take up his duties. Flying-Officer Gerrand has completed 1100 hours’ flying in all types of aircraft, and is classified A 1 both as an instructor, also in civil aviation, a distinction held by very few pilots. He has flown in every Australian State, and was one of those dispatched in search of both Kingsford Smith and Keith Anderson when these airmen were forced down in the remote corners of the continent.
