INTERRUPTED SERVICES

POWER. BOARD ANXIOUS NEW SUB-STATION DELAYED

“A number of interruptions to the supply of electric power and light have occurr ed recently and' have given a good deal ot concern,” said the engineer (Mr T. It. Overton) at the monthly meeting of the South Taranaki Electric- Power Board in Hawera last evening. “The stoppages have not been long enough to permit the starting of the Diesel stand-by plant and owing to shortage of water the board’s own hydraulic plant lias not been running to any extent. After a number of consultations with the district electrical engineer, a certain line of action lias been taken which, I think, will overcome many difficulties. “The heavy salt spray storm was the definite cause of the serious shut down on the evening of February 10, when three strain insulators at the corner of Wailii Road and South Road were ruptured. I think it would be wise for this board to urge upon the Public Works Department the necessity of proceeding with the erection of the sub-station building at Tawlnti Road.” The chairman (Mr E. A. Bone) : Do you think that these interruptions are the direct result of feeding from the Government lines without a proper substation. Mr Overton: Yes. The chairman: That is serious. Mr D. J. Hughes: There has been considerable. dissatisfaction lately among dairy farmers with electric motors. Mention was made of the fact that the Public Works Department already had tenders in hand for the erection of the sub-station and it appeared as though the undertaking was being delayed unnecessarily. Mr E. Long: I move that we write to the department stirring them up. The chairman: That is the only thing to do. The motion was seconded and carried unanimously.
