In their first innings they made 412, and Essex at the luncheon adjournment to-day ihad made 45 for three wickets.

The New Zealand bowler.s definitely held the upper hand. Pope was dismissed shortly after lunch with a low cateli by Matheson at square-leg off Vivian. Nicholls and Bray were the only others to offer resistance to the accurate howling of Vivian and Merritt. The former was exceptionally steady. He howled 29 overs, including 14 maidens. The last four wickets fell for 10 runs. Eastman was unable to bat owing to an injured hand. The innings, which realised 150 runs, lasted 195 minutes.

Lowry enforced the follow on and Essex' hatted for an" hour before stumps were drawn with the second innings score at 53 for one wicket. Merritt again howled well. He de-served-more than the one wicket.

The weather throughout was bitterly cold and several adjournments were necessitated by light showers. The attendance was 4000. The scores are:
