WELLINGTON COLLEGE WINS

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, Aug. 24. U ellington won the inter-college Rugby tournament here to-day by defeating Wanganui Collegiate School bv 28 to 14. Nelson defeated Christ’s College by 7 to 3 for second place. Wellington gained two wins, Nelson a wm and a loss, Christ’s College and Wanganui a draw and a loss each. Nelson beat Christ’s College owing; to a drop-kicked goal by Richards, who came up from the custodianship to five-eighth, replacing Kars ten (unable to play). Spence (Christ’s) scored the opening try, which Arthur was unable to convert. Richards drop-kicked a goal mid-way through the second half, putting Nelson a. point in (he lead. McArthur made an opening to send Watson and Rowe away, the lastnamed scoring. The game ended .shortly afterwards with the scores? 7 —3 in favour of Nelson.

Though the scores in the big match were decidedly in favour of Wellington, \Yaliganui put up a much better showing than indicated. Wanganui held the Wellington forwards for most of the first spell and portion of the second, losing their condition towards the last. Wanganui scored first, Bunny goaling from a penalty. Watt scored a brilliant try for Wellington to equalise, and a little later o’Lough- 1 lin kicked a- penalty, putting 'Wellington three points ahead. Kirkcaldie scored later and the teams were level again. Cover cut through to score aj try near the mists, which Bunny converted. and Wanganui led by 11 to 6. O’Loughlin kicked another penalty goal to make the score at half-time 11 to 9 in favour of Wanganui. In the second spell O’Loughlin scored two more tries, converted two and kicked a penalty. Sadler and Watt also scored a try each, these players putting Well ington up to a total of 28. Payton scored one try for Wanganui and the game finished 28 to 14 in favour of Wellington.

St. Bede’s, Christchurch, to-day defeated St. Patrick’s, Wellington, by 27 to 8 in the concluding match of the Roman Catholic colleges’ triangular Rugby tournament, thus winning the wooden spoon. St. Patrick's, Silverstream. by defeating St. Rede’s and St. Patrick’s, Wellington, bad already won the Hollcv Shield.

SOUTH ISLAND TOURNEY

TIMARU, Aug. 24

'The annual South Island secondary schools Rugby tournament- commenced to-day in fine weather. The ground was heavy. The attendance was large for an “off” day. Christchurch defeated last- year’s champions, Southland, by 21 points to 6 in a fine exhibition. In the second match Otago beat Timaru by 8 points to 6, the. .play be>ing very even. The tournament will conclude on Wednesday, Christchurch and Otago meeting in the final.
