EGMONT COUNTY COUNCIL

-MONTHLY -MEETING. RIDING REPORTS ON WORK. Members present at the monthly meeting of the Egmont County, Council yesterday were Crs. W. C. Green (chairman), J, Young, E. G. Holmes, A. A. Lilley, J. S. Tosland, G. Gibson, E. A. Collins', J. F. Shepherd, R. C. Watson.

The engineer (Air. J. G. Alclvor) reported as follows on the month’s work:

Construction.—Oeo deviation lias been shaped, the old road broken up, and the metal used for surfacing the new road. A start has been made with the fencing of the road reserve.

Maintenance.—South Road shoulders have been made up with pit metal and watertahles cleared. A considerable amount of draining has been done and culverts cleared and wooden bridges repaired where necessary. Elthani Road, a little banking and watertabliing has been done. Jha.ia Road, Patching and draining have been done and drains cleared. Skeet Road, patching and grading have been done where necessary. Oeo Riding.—Draining and watertabling have been clone on Kiri and Oeo Roads, and patching on Patiki and Watino. Opua Riding.—Aletailing of the Upper Ivina Road has been abandoned, only 130 cubic yards being crushed, but heavy patching lias been necessary. A fair amount of patching has also been done on the Opua, Namu, Upper Arawhata and Lower Waiteika Roads.

Rahotu, Riding.—Lower Parihaka, Cape, Olkahu, and Kabul Roads have been patched and watertahles cleared. Pit metal is being carted for patching Ngariki and Opourapa Roads. Newall Riding.—Patching and watertabling have been done on Warea, Newall, Stent, Wataroa and Bayly Roads.

General. —A few chains of metalling lias been done on the Mirakau Road, 170 yards being used. Most of the roads have withstood the wet weather very well, but some, particularly in Opua Riding will require attention. ■One hundred and fourteen feet of concrete pipes were made at the yard and small repairs done. The inspector of health notified one case of -scarlet fever in the Oeo Riding, Advice was received of the lodgment in the county’s bank account of tlie sums of £3BO 16s 8d for lOeo bridge loan, £615 12-si 7d on county account Oeo deviation and £1305 7s 2d for subsidy on rates collected.

The; borough inspector, New Plymouth, forwarded a -cheque of £ls 15s lid lor heavy traffic fees to> June 30. the amount to be shared with the Opunake Town Board. The Prime Minister forwarded an appeal to local bodies to do all possible to help the unemployed, realising that a great deal of valuable work has- been and can be done in this way at very little cost. Advice was. received from the counties association of an agreement made with the Post and Telegraph Department that, in the matter of removal of telegraph poles, local bodies share the cost equally with the department on main roads and pay 25 per cent, of the cost of those on by-roads.—lt was agreed to confirm the agreement. The ranger reported that the following stock had been -seized and afterwards released: 1 bull, 39 cows, 5 horses, 9 weaners, one goat. Two horses had been impounded. In all 718 dogs had been registered. The annual rates as passed at a previous meeting were confirmed ns follows :

Oeo Riding.-—General Ejd, hospital

Opua Riding.—lJd l and Id. Rahotn Riding.—lfd and Id. Newall Riding.—lfd and Id. A resolution to allow a rebate of five' per cent, on rates for prompt payment was passed on the motion of Or. Shepherd. Suggestionxs made to reduce- this were not favoured hy a. majority of councillors whose contention was- that, if the council went below five per cent, there would not be the inducement to pay. Tlie committee, Crs. El. A. Collins. J. F. Shepherd and R C. Watson, ro- - ported that tlie old Waiteika bride© was beyond repair, the retaining walls and -some beams being rotten and crumbling. It was considered that the engineer’s suggestion for concrete abutments and timber simerstructm© would be most suitable. The cost, bv using timber in stock and relief workers would be about £IOO.
