ARARATA.
COMING OF AGE PARTY. A gathering comprising all the young unmarried folk of the neighbourhood assembled at Airs Wilson's residence on July 30 to celebrate her son Tom’s twenty-first birthday. Air “Tubby” Wilson proved a capable M.C., and dancing was enjoyed to the strains of the gramophone. The guests took part in several competitions and games throughout the evening, and various prizes were won. An exhibition of telepathy by two of the younger members of the company was received with .hoots of derision, and the telepathists were ignominiously expelled as soon as their methods had (been exposed.. Towards midnight a dainty repast was served by Airs Wilson and her daughter, when Air Bruce Watts proposed the toast of the guest of honour. This was carried with acclamation and drunk with three times three. Air Tom Wilson briefly responded. Air Hawkins-Borley congratulated Airs Wilson on a very suc-j cessful evening. In the course of bis speech the speaker stressed the affection and esteem in which the AYilson family were held throughout the neighbourhood.
After supper further dancing was indulged in and Miss Watts performed at the piano and Mr Hawkins-Borley contributed songs. The party closed in the early hours of the morning with the singing of “Auld Lang Sviie.” GENERAL. While Mr Richard Buckley’s trousers were drying before the fire recently they exploded with a loud report. Although partially stunned by theforcc of the explosion, he liad sufficient presence of mind to seize the garments and hurl them from the bouse, where they smouldered on the lawn with a series of minor detonations. The action of sodium chlorate | is considered responsible for the catastrophe. The local factory is running every other day. Mr Wilson .lias returned from England. and is once again liapplv restored to health. 'Pile local wrestling club meets at tin- ball every fortnight, and several stirring contests have been witnessed.
