FIRE FIGHTERS’ CONTESTS

9—DISTRICT DEMONSTRATIONS. CRABTREE SHIELD TO ELTHAM. The district demonstrations arranged by the Eitham Fire Brigade and held yesterday at- Taumata - Park proved a great success, drawing- entries from brigades as far north as Waitara and down to Pa tea and showing in a practical way the good work done by the fire fighters of the province. There was a good attendance of the public and everyone followed closely the various events on the programme and showed appreciation by liberal applause. Most interest centred in the three men event, for which Mr E. Crabtre had donated a handsome' shield. After a good struggle this was secured by the Eitham men, who put up a good performance to win by a narrow margin of five seconds from Stratford. '

The officials controlling the demonstration were: Referee and- marshal; Superintendent Nuttall; starter, Mr H. Drabble; timekeepers, Messrs L. Nees, J. Kelliher and A. Lethbridge; judges, Deputy-Superintendent Murray and Mr S. Dunbar; disc steward, Mr W. Hornblow; call steward, Mr Pliilpotts; examiner, Mr V. Powell; hoir. I secretary, Mr F, Gyde. The arrangeiments were'so well made that everything went without a hitch from .first to last event. An afternoon tea tent was conducted by Mrs Trim and Mrs Gyde, and proved a welcome addition to the running of the meeting. The results were as follow: :

Three men wet, carry disabled.— Waitara B, 54 4-ssec, 1; Waitara A, 55 3-ssec, 2; Inglewood, 57 2-ssee, 3; Eltham A, 57 4-ssec, .4- Patea also competed. Inglewood also competed. 1 SHIELD PRESENTED. At the conclusion competitors) and the public gathered at the secretary’s tent for the presentation of the shield by the donor. Mr Crabtree said he was very pleased to do something to help the cause of fire fighters’ work. He had the greatest pleasure in presenting the shield to the Eltham team in the hope that it would lead to eveii keener competition in the future. The presentation was acknowledged by the leader of the El till am team. Superintendent Nuttall said f: that Eltham were very satisfied with the results of the meeting and hoped that next year they would be able to put on the big provincial demonstration, for which there were available several shields and a considerable sum for prizes. He said he felt sure it would be a great success. Cheers were given for the winners, for the officials and for the donor of the shield.

ELTHAM COMPETITIONS." Two competitions amongst the Eltham brigade were decided during the ; week-end for the Gilbert Memorial. Championship Cap and the Cresswell 'Cup, the former being won by L.
