CORRESPONDENCE

BAND MUSIC ON RACECOURSE.

(To the Editor). Sir, —Would you kindly allow me, through the columns of your paper, to congratulate Hawera on its very fine band. I was one of the visitors who attended the trotting meeting this Easter, and feel that 1 would not like to leave your fine little town without saying the music given by your band was the best that 1 have heard on any racecourse in New Zealand. I might also state that I heard many other people remark on the excellence of the music given.—Yours sincerely, A SOUTHERN VISITOR,

OIL BORING

(To the Editor)

Sir, —Penetrating old Mother Eeartli in the hunt for oil has been going on for many years in and around New Plymouth. Needless to say a good oil field in this Dominion would be an empire asset of illimitable value. My main reason for referring to this subject is that when digging a hole for a gate post a £ew days ago I saw the scales of a fish as 1 lifted the spade. Olf course the outline of the fish was gone in an instant. When a hoy my lather got me to stand one day and watch a blast of papa rook where the railway line was being made at the Tongahoe, near Hawera. He said, “you will see fishes as the rock is blasted.” This was so—beautiful silver forms of fish flashed, but were gone directly the air touched them. Experts say petroleum comes from fish, hence my appeal for an oil search on this side of the j mountain. Recollecting a conversation I had with a Mr. Morgan, Government geologist (many years ago), his remarks stand out for remarkable accuracy. He said, “oil will only he got in small quantities around Mofuroa. Volcanic actions and upheavals of past ages have caused fissures underground through which the oil is forced, hut the main storage is not in that vicinity.” Why boring has not been tried on this side of Egmont seems strange. An old well digger informed me over forty years ago of a well he sunk in the Manaia town that gave strong indications of oil. I have endeavoured to interest oil men to put down some wells between Manaia and Opunake, but so far have not succeeded, sq draw attention, Mr, _ Editor, . through your columns to see if that will interest anybody in the subject matter referred to. —l am, etc., D. J. HUGHES.
