HAWERA CLUB GATHERING
The ladies’ branch of the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club held its fiist electric light sports meeting on the Hawera showgrounds last. evening, m aid of the earthquake Relief Fund. Unforunaely the weather militated, against a large attendance of the public, a bleak south-easterly wind making conditions in the open anything but pleasant. When the lights flashed on a fair number of spectators were revealed packed togethei foi warmth on one section of the stand. Soon after the -Hawera (Municipal Band struck up a lively tune and, with a number of other selections during the evening, considerably brightened the sports proceedings. All the events were keenly contested and there were some close finishes. A team of young ladies from New Plymouth and 'other competitors from Stratford, Eltham and Opunako attended and scored a fair measure of success.
A lengthy programme was disposed of in a littie under two hours, the following officials being responsible for the organisation and smooth running of the meeting: Referee, (Mr A. Whiting; inspectors and marksmen, Messrs R. Allen, A. G. Whiting, S. A. Lay, and W. Ritter; timekeepers, Messrs -G. 'Ho.stick, F. C. Roden, V. Gerrand, and C. 11. iSargent; call stewards, Messrs J. Dredge, junr., and K. Barron; official announcer, Mr J. Dredge; starter, Mr IL. I. Matter; handicappers, Mrs Higgs and Mr C. .1. Cummings; result steward, Mr F. F. Citing; marshall, Mr A. F. Spratt; secretary, Miss N. Adams. After’ the sports the visitors were entertained at a dance and supper in the Foresters’ Hall. There was a splendid attendance and the social proceedings were thoroughly enjoyed. The following were the sports results:—
