SOUTH TARANAKI TOURNEY. NEARING THE END. Until the week-end the weather for the South Taranaki croquet tourney was all that could be desired, but on Monday morning it broke and., though the early part of the day was fine, play towards the end was under winter conditions, the finalists in the South Taranaki championship, Messrs. Hartnell and Gibbs, playing in overcoats and having to shelter at times. It said much for their enthusiasm that they stuck to it and completed tlie match Mr. Hartnell was playing very well and, though Mr. Gibbs made some excellent breaks his opponent got home bv a fair margin. bins, blasters is to be congratulated on her consistently good play in the championship for -ladies. She met Mrs. Stevens in the final and a keen contest resulted. Both played! fine croquet, hut Mrs. Masters’ steadiness won her the match. One of the most exciting matches was that between Mrs. Masters and Captain Hartnell for the final in the first life of the South Taranaki singles. Mrs. Masters got away in good style and was three hoops from the peg before her opponent made the second boon with .one hall. He then got in with a long shot and making a great break went out to win in a remarkable finish, 26—24. . .
