CARNIVAL PREPARATIONS. DISCUSSION BY COMMITTEE. Owing to the inclement weather conditions the bi-weekly programme to have been held last evening by the Hawera Anna tour Swimming Club in the progressive banner competition was abandoned. The competition will he continued on Friday evening. Arrangements for the carnival which it is proposed to hold on Monday, March 9, were discussed at a meeting of the committee held last evening. Mr A. W. Lawn (president) occupied the chair. . , . The secretary (Mr M. R. Nelson) .reported that invitations were being extended to members of the Auckland team to compete at the national championships to visit the carnival at Hawera while returning north from Wanganui, where the national championships were to be held on March 5, 3 and 7. It was also suggested that a Wanganui-Taranaki representative relay race for teams of eight or ten should lie staged. A further item of particular interest would be an attempt by the centre 50 yards champion, S. Anderson, of the Hawera Club, to lower his own record of 27 4-5 sec established for the 50 yards last week. CENTRE .CHAMPIONS.

Mr D. Cl Ryan, manager of the Hawera team which annexed the banner at the centre championships at New Plymouth last week, presented a report expressing appreciation of the exemplary behaviour of the team and calling attention to its meritorious performance. Thirty-two of the team selected made the trip, together with 33 supporters of the club. Thanks were due to several owners of cars who co-operated in providing transport for the team. Mr Ryan detailed the successes gained by the team in gaining 10 championships, eight runnerup positions and seven third placings, making a points tally of 81 out of the total of 153 for the programme, the club becoming the first winner of the points banner, while four of the seven records made were established by Hawear competitors. While expressing admiration of the organisation of the championship tourney and the able administration, together with the hosoitality extended to the visitors, Mr Ryan offered certain comment respecting actual performances and recommended competitors to give further consideration to starting, turning, participation in suitable events, finishing and style in the water, particularly in reference to breaststroke events. “The high diving boards troubled the Hawera. entrants. It is a pitv our baths are not equipped with really high diving boards,” added Mr Ryan. Mr Ryan was accorded a vote of thanks for bis services as manager of the team and bis report. A letter congratulating the chib on its success at the centre championships’ was received from Miss S. ScaVer, the former intermediate and lady breaststroke champion and. present record holder, who was prevented through illness from competing this rear.

The secretary was requested to forward a letter to bliss Seaver. expressing appreciation of her continued interest in the affairs of tlie club, together with wishes for her speedy recovery.

GENERAL

The success of the learn to swim campaign conducted among school pupils of the district last week was referred to by the president, and the meeting accorded votes of thanks to the several members of the club who had given service as instructors and also to employers of the town who had given co-operation by granting employees the necessary leave of absence to carry out the instruction work. A financial report- presented by the treasurer (Mr O. V. Church) indicated that the recent benefit- carnival would result in a donation of approximately £8 to the earthquake relief fund. The donation of a medal from Morris Ltd., of Hawera. was reported and was accepted with thanks.
