WIFE OF CHICAGO’S MAYOR
■MRS “ BTG BILL” BOBBED. By the irony of fate, 'Mrs William Hale Thompson, wife of “'Big Bill ’ Thompson, Mayor of Chicago, who heads an administration and has been widely accused of corrupt alliance with that city’s leading criminals, fell a victim to armed bandits. She was recently relieved of all her cash and of jewellery valued at several thousand pounds. Mi's Thompson alighted from her car on returning from a theatre, and as the chauffeur, Peter O’Malley, opened the door for her the gangsters knocked him down with a blow from behind. Then they dragged Mrs Thompson into the vestibule of the house and took all her valuables. One of the bandits who stood guard over O ’Malley cleared his pockets, and in doing so discovered the policeman’s shield which the chauffeur wore. At that moment Airs Thompson, who had then been released by the other men, rushed forward, crying hysterically, to O’Malley’s aid. The thieves thereupon sprang into the ear and drove off.
