VISITORS TO HAWERA. j AM KIM CANS TO APPEAL!. J Hawera is to be visited by three I American champion athletes, who are tdue to appear at the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club’s electric light sports meeting to be held at the show grounds next Wednesday, commencing at 8 p.m. The Americans are Messrs Simpson, Kiser and Rotliert, all university men and all champions in their respective events. Simpson, who is to meet the Australian champion, Carlton, at Wellington on February 21, is credited with 9 2-ssee. for the 109 yards, Kiser lias run a mile in 4min. 13sec., and Rothert’s standard may he guessed from the way in which he can put the shot, having since his arrival in the Dominion shattered the Australasian record.
With these throe great athletes and all the host amateur athletes from New Plymouth to Wanganui competing, next Wednesday’s programme should he one of more Ilian ordinary merit and is sure to attract a large attendance. Prior to the commencement of the programme 8. A. Lay (British Empire champion) and Harlow Rotliert (U.S.A.) will give an exhibition of javelin throwing. Special interest is attached to the ladies’ events, especially the 100 yards, I in which there will be 30 competitors,) including Miss B. Stevens, of Hawera (centre and provincial champion), Miss O’Byrne, of New Plymouth (provincial champion To yards), and Miss Greagor, of Wanganui (Wanganui champion). Should these lady runners succeed in getting into the iinal that event should prove one of the star items on a more than usually interesting programme. The Hawera Municipal Band will provide the musical programme.
