DRASTIC RETRENCHMENT
SOUTH AFRICAN CIVIL SERVICE. CLOSING OF MINE AFFECTS 2200’ (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) CAPE TOWN, Feb. 3, The Government is planning drastic retrenchment in the Public Service in view of the mounting deficit. The Railway Conciliation Board has been summoned to consider proposals to save PoOO.OOO. including reductions m piece work and bonus to artisans of 50 per cent, alternatively, reduction of hours per week to 44, both involving £250,000, reductions' in overtime rates, injury on duty compensation, the compulsory retirement of artisans over 55 years of age, and the dismissal of temporary casual workers. The working day is to bp lengthened throughout the Public Service by half an hour. At big copper mine at Bivnna, in Northern Rhodesia, was closed to-day and 200 .Europeans and 2000 natives were dismissed.
