LABOURITE HOOTED
PAPKES SEAT BY-ELECTION
AIR GARDEN’S THREAT.
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph
Copyright.) SYDNEY, Feb. 3. Unprecedented scenes marked the declaration of the Parkes poll at Ashiield Town Rail to-night. The successful candidate, Major C. W. C. Murr, was tumultuously cheered, but the defeated Labourite, Mr Martin, was hooted out of the building after declaring that “never will the Labour Party repudiate its flesh and blood in Australia.” The National Anthem was sung with the greatest fervour. Commenting upon the outcome of the by-election, Mr J. S. Garden, secretary of the New South AVales Labour "Council, said the result emphasised that the electors were sick of promises. What they wanted was action.
Unless something very definite were done before February 16, when the Australian Council of Trades Unions would be meeting in Sydney, said Mr Garden, “then I say quite distinctly that definite action will be taken by the workers to save themselves and that congress will be the agent that will release the growing discontent of all sections of the community caused by the present policy of inaction, and what the release of such discontent will lead to I cannot say.”
