. HA WKE’S BAY LIST. SERIOUS POSITION THIS YEAR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, Jan. 15. That the teaching profession, in common with all other interests, would be seriously affected in the matter of unemployment was the statement made by Mr G. A. Maddison, chairman of tne Hawke’s Bay Education Board, to-day. At the present time, he said, the board had on its lists the names of 72 teachers awaiting employment, but it was anticipated that on a liberal estimate not more than 15 to 20 of these could be engaged by February 1 when the schools re-open. “There is always a certain amount of unemployment amongst the extrainees at the beginning of each year,” he remarked, “but the position in 1931, will be serious and far worse than it has ever boon previously. The position, of course, is accentuated by the necessity of economy in expenditure.” ALLOWANCES REDUCED'. TRAINING COLLEGE STUDENTS. The ‘Wellington Education Board lias issued a circular -signed by Mr. E. Hylton. assistant secretary, advising' probationers and training college students tliat their allowance is being reduced by £5. The circular reads as follows: I am directed to- inform you that the board is- in receipt of a memorandum from the Education Department stating that the Government has found it necessary, owing to the present financial depression to exercise the most rigid economy in connection with puHic expendi“The board has now been obliged to direct that expenditure be reduced! m some instances. In_this connection the board has been advised that the allowance to probationers and training college students, including those avlio are already in the service, is to be reduced hv £5 from January 1, 1931. In the ease of those already in the service, necessary adjustments will be made m th pay list for the current month.”
