COMMUNIST CAMPAIGN
SEARCH FOR. RED CONVERTS. FIELD AMONG UNEMPLOYED. lUniteu Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) NEW YORK, Jan. S. New York City was disturbed all day to-day by the activities of Communist agitators endeavouring to seek converts among the unemployed. Peaceful groups of unemployed at ‘ ‘bread-lines' ’ and charity centres were troubled by agitators until whom the police battled with orders “not to let the unemployed become Reds.” Communists at a Salvation Army “bread-line” in Central New York were the cause of a considerable riot in which one policeman was attacked and injured. In Brooklyn Borough a police commander, aided only by one police lieutenant, held off a mob of Reds with bare fists and frustrated an attempt to smash the doors of the Salvation Army headquarters there. Police reserves were assigned tonight to protect the relief agencies, which during the day were impeded in providing relief to the unemployed.
