FRUIT RESEARCH

QUEST FOR IMPROVEMENT

ENGLISH STOCKS IN USE.

A consignment of 3000 stocks of apple, pear, peach, plum and cherry trees arrived at the Palmerston North Plant Research Station on Tuesday from the East Alai ling Experimental Station, England. A start has been made with the planting at the Tiritea area, where the plants will be worked this winter with standard bud-wood from selected commercial varieties. Next year these plants will be transferred to other areas, while further observations will be made in Palmerston North. Trees, with stocks of New Zealand origin, will be grown alongside the importations, and one of the objects of the experimental work will be to ascertain if it would be preferable to use the East Alalling type of stock for orchard work rather than the New Zealand type. The experiment wi ll be a lengthy one and will entail a. vast amount of detailed research work. It will involve the establishment of an orchard and it is unlikely that definite results will be available until a number of rears have elapsed.
