TE KIRI.

GENERAL

(From Our Own Correspondent)

The local Scottish Society held ite usual successful social or ‘‘iiogmany,” hereon New Years’ Eve. Visitors were present from all parts of the district Excellent music was played by Hendersons’ Star Band oi seven, instruments, and extras were contributed by Miss R. Corbett and Mr. W. Coxliead (piano) and Mr. H. Hooker (drums and effects). Haymaking had just started m this district when the rain came on (accompanied by heavy wind) last week. One or two fine days enabled what was down then to be saved but that mowed on Monday and Tuesday will be drenched in the' heavy rain now falling, though it seems to be a moot point whether* it is not better down than beaten flat like the paddocks still uncut are> now. The hay crops are exceptionally heavy this year, too, and when down make very awkward mowing. Still it is an ill wind that blows one any good” and the crops and pastures will benefit considerably. The holidays passed off quietly here, everyone going into town—Hawera, Elitha m, Opuinike and Kapcmga each taking their quota—on Christinas Eve and the Opunake beach and Stratford races' claiming many on New Years’ Day. Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Nobbs and family ar© spending the holidays with, relatives in Auckland, having motored through. Mr. Phillips of Auckland, been staying with his sister, Mrs. Ewart. Mr. and Mi's. J. Anderson and family motored through, fom Hawke’s Bay and spent a week with Mr. and Mrs. J. Templeton. , George Miles is home again alter his long stay in the Ifawera Hospital. A New Year service was held in the Awatuna Presbyterian Church last Sunday and the ’ congregation was very pleased to isee Rev. Wheat’y able to he present again. The service was conducted by Rev. E.
