HARVEST FIELD TRAGEDY
MAN’S FALL BEFORE MOWER. INJURIES PROVE FATAL, (By Telegraph—Press Association.) BLENHEIMV Jan. 3. As the result of a harvesting accident which occurred at Grassmere a fortnight ago, James Smyre, 30 years of age, single, has succumbed at the Whirau. Hospital. When deceased wa,s mowing grass, his team started to move off. Smyre ru she cl to check them. He was knocked down in the path of the mowing knife and 1 dragged for about 80 yards. A child on the machine had the presence of mind to prill the. knife out of gear, but the steel fingiers of the guard struck Smyre on the head and back, fracturing his skull. Acute infective meningitis set in with fatal consequences.

NEW YEAR’S EVE. (From Our Oini Correspondent.) There was a large crowd in ManaSa on New Year’s Eve and business people were well satisfied. The town again was beautifully decorated and the Manaia Municipal Band, under Conductor J. A. G. Cosgrove, rendered a programme. The band played another programme before midnight and played the new year in. Tliere was a large crowd, which joined in with the band and sang “Auld Lang Syne.’’
