TKR ELILPNjG- SPRINT CONTESTS A series of races between 1 Willy Falk Hansen, the Danish rider, who in: his amateur days 'had won the sprint championship o<t' the world, and W J. Bailey’ the Englishman! and four times world’s champion, marked a professional cycling meeting at Herne Hill, London, recently. The. result of the international encounter was l a triumph for Bailey, who, aftei* losing the first of the three races, showed superior track-craft to beat ■ the Dane in the remaining two contests. Ini the first race, over a distance, of one lap, Hansen allowed his opponent to .make the; pace until the home! straight, when the Dane .shot ahead, to- win by inches in 48sec. 'Bailey levelled matters by taking the second race (.11 laps). It was the Englishman ’& turn to do the “jumping,” and in the back straight of the second lap he opened up a gap which Hansen 1 could not close. Bailey won by five lengths in 1 Imln 3:9 2-sscc. 'The deciding match, held over one lap, was the most exciting of the three. -Hansen led at the start, and Bailey, repeating hig previous' tactics, spurted to take the load. Tine l Dane, however, was ready for him, and the pair raced together in. a neck-arid-neck struggle, Bailey just getting the better of a. lightning sprint on the. home straight to win: by half a length in olsce.
