PERSPIRATION LOSES STAKE
SAT IT RATED -S ADDLE - GLOTII. FILLY O VER- WEIGHTED. The fact that a filly perspired freely in a race at Gatwick, England, recently. caused Ivor disqualification after she had won, 'Fred -Herbert, the jockey of Kettle, weighed out with dry equipment and saddle cloth. When lie- .weighed l in after the race, however, the .filly had perspired so mncli that the; saddile cloth was saturated and the moisture so collect eci| -carried -the e-Gmilbine-clf -weight of jockey and equipment a. trifle over 21lb above the weight allotted in the handicap. One of the ,strictest rules of racing is that any hors-e carrying more than two pounds over weight shall be disqualified “unless the stewards are satisfied that such- excess wh-iglit has been caused by wet. ’•’ As there was no rain at-Gatwick during the race, the “wet” clause did not apply. A request ibv Herbert to be. allowed to weigh in .with a dry saddle -cloth, such as he had whoa the race started, was refused.
