UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
APPLICATION FOB- SUSTENANCE ALLOWANCE. At the meeting of the Hawera Unemployment Belief Committee yesterday afternoon it was decided l to make application for sustenance allowances for certain necessitous cases .who are •physically unable to work. Mr. E. A. Pacey presided, also present being Mrs. Henry, Bev. E. S. Emmitt, Messrs. W. W. Sutton, A. H. Lankman, F. AV. Horner, J. Gillanders, A. T. Wills, Jas. E. Campbell (secretary) and H. G. Dickie, M.P. Mr. Campbell said that the applicants for work were all vex*y anxious to get a start and a number that had been offered scrub and gorse cutting had shown no hesitation about accepting it, but rather a keenness to do so. A number of farmers had telephoned for men and had said they did not require the subsidy, and it was splendid the way in which some farmers were doing their best to help. One had said that lie could not have wished for two better men than those sent him by the committee and he wished that lie could always get workers like’ them. It was added that work had been found for 17 men for 09 man days and t!ie borough had placed 14 men. Tt was hepod to place a number of others Tiefore the. holidays.
