RIOT IN DURBAN

POLICE CHARGE- NATIVES. END OF DEMONSTRATION. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) CAPE TOWN, Dec. 17. Durban natives have* been threatening for some years to burn their passes on the anniversary day of defeat of Dingaiin, which is observed as : a public holiday. This year there were no threats of a' demonstration, but a crowd of 1000 gathered outside Durban. A printed, (lodger stated: “This is the day for: putting the passes in Hell!” An inflammatory speech was made by a native, Who announced himself as the organiser of the Communists. It was decided that the natives should form up and .march to town in order to join the natives from the docks. The Inspector of Police forbade the march and i the natives defied the order, whereupon 50 police, armed with pick handies, charged and were met by a fusilade of stones. One native was killed, and seven, including the organiser, seriously injured. [Dingaan was a Zulu leader who massacred a Boer immigrant party in Natal toward the end of 1837. in the fighting that followed his army was defeated, and he fied to Swaziland, where he was murdered.
