FAMOUS SHIP TO BE SCUTTLED

LONG DOMINION SERVICE

Verv shortly the Union Company’s passenger steamer Mararoa will join, the same company' as the Corinna, which was scuttled in Cook Strait a few weeks ago. The Mararoa has been lying in the stream at Wellington out of commission for the last three years. When the company’s recently purchased liner Monowai arrived from Bombay the Mararoa was moved alongside her and many of her saloon fittings were removed for use in the third-class in the new liner. The Mararoa’s oil burning installation has also been removed and refitted in the Waipiata, and the oncefamous old ship is now merely a shell and will he towed round to the patent slip to-day to have what remains of value aboard removed prior to her last short vovage. Built in 1881 by W. Deuny and Brothers, Dumbarton, for the Union Company, the Mararoa is _ a steel l single-screw steamer of 2598 tons gross and 1329 tons net. Her principal measurements are: Length, 320 feet; breadth, 42 feet; depth, 24.7 feet. After arriving at Sydney from Home on November 26, 1885, the Mararoa entered the San Francisco mail service, and a short time later the Australian-New Zealand service. Tn 1905 she entered _ the LytteltonWellington ferry service and, with the exception of two or three short breaks when she wa.s doing service .in Australian waters, continued in that capacitv as ferry steamer until her last trip in June, 1927.
