ST. HELEN’S HOMES
HOSPITAL CHAIRMAN S DECISION “IRREGULAR AND IMPROPER.” (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 27. Sti'ong opposition to a suggestion by the Health Department that the Wellington Hospital Board should' provide maternity service for Wellington and the Petone and Hutt district, to supplement the St. Helen’s Hospital service, was expressed at a meeting of the board to-day. It was contended that the founders ol the St. Helen’s Homes never intended that this branch of social .service should be carried on by hospital boards. "Expressing surprise at the arrangement arrived at between the Auckland Boat'd and the department, Mr C. M. Luke said that if the chairman of the Auckland Boai'd had acted in his capacity as chairman of the Hospital Boards’ Association without consulting his colleagues he had done an irregular thing. It was decided to send the following remit to the annual conference: That the question of the administration of St. Helen’s hospitals, having regard to the new phase as suggested by a letter from the Health Department, receive the serious consideration of the Hospital Boards’ Association.
