ADDRESS TO MOUNTAINEERS

ALPINE CLUB LEADERS. AUDIENCE AT STRATFORD. Lectures given by Mr Rod Syme and Mr Bert Murray/ captain and vicecaptain respectively of the Mt. Egmont Alpine C*'lub i who were accompanied by the president (Mr L. 0. Hooker), held the attention of a gathering of about 80 members and supporters of the Stratford Mountain Club in the Stratford Drill Hall on Wednesday evening.

Mr Syme occupied the major portion of the evening with a lantern lecture featuring a return trip made by himself, together with Messrs Murray and Mace over the Copeland Pass in the Southern Alps to the Franz Josef glacier in January of 1929 and views taken, during an ascent of Mt. Cook by the lecturer and Air Mace, He also showed a farther series of slides illustrating the work in the erection of the Syme Hut on Faatham’s Peak (Mt. Egmont). v

Usful advice, which should he particularly- beneficial to climbers in the early stages of their experience, was afforded! during the lecture by Mr Murray, who spoke of dangers and difficulties which may- be expected at various times' of toe year and referred to snow-blindness, snow-burn and the problem of keeping direction. The thanks of the Stratford Club for _ the interesting information made available by the lecturers were voiced by the president, Dr W. Gordon, who subsequently entertained the visitors at supper. Under the auspices of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club a special display of photographic views is to be given at the AY inter Show buildings to-morrow evening by Dr AA r . F. Buist. Slides and moving pictures will be featured including a film illustrating a flight by ’.plane over Mt. Hgmont. The public is invited.
