WAVERLEY RACES

CUP TO FERNDEN OPEN SIX TO MELISSA BIG FALL IN “TOTE”. FIGURES. Though good sport was presented m the Labour Day programme ot the Waver lev Racing Club yesterday tire number'of patrons in attendance was below that usually attracted by the fixture. Gate takings showed a drop of £2OO as. compared with the gathering, while the totalisator returns disclosed the big decrease or £7,694 iOs, the sum of only £IU,oUo 10s going through the machine as compared with £13,300. _ The threat of inclement weathea which loomed throughout the province during the morning militated, doubtless against the attendance. Rain was actually falling a few moments prior to the' commencement of the first race, but though the atmosphere was chilly, conditions wero fine for tho 1 mainder of the day. Heavy ram experienced previously, deadened the track, which considering .the circumstances was, however, in excellent order. With the exception of the hurdles, which filled With a bare double-dividend list, and the Flying Hack Handicap* winch drew only tour runners, fair-sized fields appeared foi the eight events and in the majority of cases finishes were close. The cup event drew a good field or nine, among which pride of place was taken by the Wanganui gelding, Fernden, with the Stratford trained Hopwood at the former’s girth. The open six also drew nine runners and in a close finish, the honours went to the New Plymouth mare, Melissa, with the Hawera gelding Bonogne a short neck behind in second place. The cup favourite, Ruanui, was beaten into fourth place and his rider, Brodie, was subsequently questioned by the .stipendarv steward, Mr B._ N. Sandilands, who also cautioned W. Hall for his. riding of the top-weight. Viaduct, in the Morton Memorial.

Winning dividends were returned by three first favourites and in most other instances the dividend payers were well supported though Spearform was allowed to create a surprise in the seventh race. The prize money was well distributed. Three first places and two thirds were taken by Marton candidates; two firsts, one second and a third by New Plymouth horses; two fii-sts by Wanganui horses, and one fifst ; four seconds and three, third placings by Hawera nominees. Of the other minor placings Waverley accounted for two seconds, Stratford for a second and a third, and Fordell for a third. The administrative work received capable attention from the officials ccfmbining with the president, Mr J. E. Palmer, and the secretary, Mr W. Macfarlane. Mr J. D. Donovan officiated as starter and Mr J. Cameron as judge. An appreciated programme •of selections was .rendered by the Queen Alexandra (Wanganui) Band, under the direction of Capt. Geo. Buckley.
