GALE AT AUCKLAND
SEVENTY MILE'S AN HOUR. .DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 25. A gale of exceptional severity swept Auckland this morning. Squalls reached the velocity of 70 miles an hour. A big petrol tank, party built, collapsed ; it was secured by steel wires, but the bplts fastening the thick iron plates were torn out and the huge cylinder gave way. A large portion of the roof was torn off a motor-body building works and a portion of the roof, measuring 60 feet bv 40 overhung the footpath. It broke telegraph wires and fused a power cable.. In the harbour the auxiliary schooner, Piri, dragged her anchor until the harbour tug towed her to a wharf. Much damage was occasioned to gardens and orchards, particularly j i tomato i. _
