ORDERS FOR BRITISH FIRMS

STEEL AND ENGINEERING WORK (British Official WireleonJ RUGBY, Oct. 25. Numerous contracts have been .secured bv British steel and engineering firms' in the face of severe international competition during the last few days. Messrs Turton Platts, of Sheffield, have obtained the largest order for railway buffers of forged steel ever received at Sheffield. It will keep their ■shops going night and day for many months. In Manchester Metropolitan Vickers have secured an order for £120,000 worth of electrical mining gear for South Africa and Australia. Parsons, of Newcastele, have gained a £145,000 order from the Corporation of Copenhagen for tubro-alternators and condensing plant. Parsons have also received an order for big tubro-alter-, nators and condensing plant for a power station in South Africa. Others have been received for 25,000 tons of patent fuel for the French railways. . , Manufacturers in Sheffield have secured contracts for steel tanks and fittings from the Admiralty, .and for carriage underframes and bogies, and for bullet-proof nlates. The Buenos Aires Great- Southern Railway Company has also nlaced two largo orders with London firms, and one of £25,000 with the English Electric Company for tragfion motors for Diesel electric train units. An order for several Napier allmetal aeroplanes liase been -placed by the Greek Government. It will amount to about £200,000.
