GOLF.
— SOUTH TARANAKI TOURNAAIENT. OPENING- THIS AIORNING. The adverse weather conditions were trying for the opening of the Hawera Golf Club’s tournament to-day, and heavy- rain over-night had made the links' sodden. Threatening showers I this morning held, off until after a start was made, but a slight drizzle then, set in. It is expected that today-, with the course holding, good scores will be the exception rather than the rule. Yesterday the course was in ideal condition, and if no further heavy rain is experience'll should improve materially for play during the weekend and oil Alonday. The entries this year total 104, in-
eluding several prominent provincial players, but a number who otherwise would have competed are participating in the New Zealand championship at Palmerston North.
