TENNIS

TARANAKI ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEETING HELD

PROVISION FOR RESERVES. The annual meeting of the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association was held at New Plymouth last night, about 20 delegates from affiliated clubs being present.

The report and balance-sheet (previously published) were adopted without comment.

The chairman stated that the association’s finances appeared to be in much the same position as at the previous annual meeting. With one small exception all the subscriptions had been received from the clubs. Unsuitable weather had seriously upset the calculations of tennis players and prevented much play in the early part of the 1929-30 season. Mr. Strombom, the secretary, had kept is close touch with the president and the executive and had carried out his duties very well, keeping clubs regularly informed of tlie business of meetings held. The management of tennis, Mr. Griffiths reminded the delegates, lay in their hands, and if they had any suggestions for the betterment of the game they should be brought to the notice of the management committee.

SCHEME FOR RESERVES. With the object of helping the association to save from its revenue and in time have a reserve for constructive activity, Mr. F. S. Grayling brought forward an unusual notice of motion, which was approved with slight alterations. This provided that in the association's constitution rule 2 should be altered by adding as a sub-clause the following words: “To raise money by the acquirement or transfer to the association ot any life or endowment policy or policies or hy any other means connected with insurance, and to pay the premiums or other payments payable in respect of such life or endowment policies or any other insurance scheme, or take up shares in an approved building society or any other approved investment. ’ ’ Mr. Grayling explained that the amendment would give the management committee power to carry out certain suggestions. By means of an endowment insurance policy on one of the club members, to be decided, and maturing in about 10 years, a form of compulsory saving would be instituted for the association. The sum obtained at the end of that period would assist the association in the establishing of its own courts for tournament purposes. Any other means involving satisfactory and regular saving would suit the purpose. The chairman endorsed Mr. Grayling's ideas. Some effort for the future would be very helpful. He remarked jocularly that there was always the possibility of the association collecting its insurance earlier should an unforeseen event in the insurance occur and the person insured not live for the full period. The rate of interest would then be much improved. Supporting the motion, Mr. Bennett (Roto ka re) stated that it had been his intention to move on lines similar to those suggested by Mr. Grayling—to move for the establishment of a sinking fund with regular payments from the association’s funds. Mr. C. B. Webster stated that the Miramar (Wellington) scheme had been financed by debentures, and it might be possible at some time to follow that plan.

Mr. Grayling’s motion was carried unanimously.

On .Mr. Picard’s suggestion a committee comprising Messrs Grayling. Griffiths and Webster will report to the next meeting of the management committee upon the suitability or various investments.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected: President. Mr. E. Griffiths; vice-presi-dents, Messrs C. B. Webster, R. H. Leeee; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr. C. H. Strorabom; honorary auditor, Mr. J. M. Hine; delegates to the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. Messrs Henderson and Swinburne; management committee, the president, vice-presidents and Messrs A. L Picard (Eltham), It. Syme (Hawera). F. S. (Grayling (Waiwaka), Bennett (Rotoknre), and A. H. Richards (New Plymouth); Taranaki selectors, Messrs Picard (South Taranaki); North Taranaki selection and ladder committee, Messrs L. Berg, \ . It!. Kerr and Richards; South Taranaki selection committee, already selected. “The secretary was voted an honorarium of £6 Gs in appreciation of his services to the association. Mr. Leeee reported that under the control of Mr. Thompson a sub-commit-tee had been, formed in the south to foster inter-club competitions. Mr. Thompson explained that the clubs in the group had agreed to pay os a team, but it was hoped that besides giving its approval, the association might if necessary help the cotmnittee to "a small extent financially. Competitions were being held on Saturdays through the less busy part of the summer for a month from mid-November and from the middle of January to the end of that month. Seven A teams and eight B teams had been entered.

The chairman expressed his approval of the southern clubs’ idea and expressed the opinion that their requests would receive favourable consideration from the association.

Letters of thanks to Messrs Swinburne and Henderson for their repiesentation on the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Council were authorised. The meeting extended its congratulations to Mr. A. G. Wallace on being elected president of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. A vote ol thanks was accorded to the New Plymouth Club for its conduct ol the last Taranaki tournahient.

The next annual meeting tvill be held at- Stratford, and the 1932 meeting at Hawera.
