SOUTHLAND’S GOOD WIN. DEFEAT OF CANTERBURY SIDE. (By Telegraph—Press Association..) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 17. The Southland Rugby representatives to-day defeated Canterbury by 24 points to 12. Sip'Uthland kicked off facing tire sun and a fairly stiff breeze. A sensational try came within a few nriutes. Bell kicked' through from sv scrum at Canterbury’s twenty-five and the ball went over the line. A Canterbury man dived for it and misled and Bell, who was following fast, touched down. The kick failed. A fiue try by Hart was the next tit-hit. Canterbury was attacking and a scrum was ordered on the Southland twenty-live. The ball came out to Hazei hurst. who passed: to Carle ton. Thence the bail went to Hart on the .right wing. He made a good run towards the corner and when, blocked stopped suddenly and made as if to ppsisi infield. The ruse succeeded and Hart scored near the corner. Lilburne’s kick was a poor one. The game bad been in progress less than 15 minutes. Southland immediately launched a vigorous attack which culminated in Metcalf scoring between the posts. Diack failed to goal. Kearney had to leave, the field owing to an injured ankle and was replaced by Wilders. Canterbury evened the scores when the-balil travelled down the line of backs to Hart, who raced across at the colder and dodged round to. touch down behind the posts. GecUles failed to convert. Just before half-time Canterbury reduced Southland’s lead when Thompson dashed across to scene following a loose rush. Lilburne was unable to goali the scores at the interval being Southland 13. Canterbury 9. Stubbs was playing full-back for Southland on the resumption of play, Porter having received a head injury. Canterbury commenced' throwing the ball abcijt and was gaining ground with criso passing rushes. Sudclenly McKay changed defence into attack with a fast run down the right wing, followed by a centring kick. From the i ensuing play G-e.ddes secured 'possession and dived over near the posts. He converted the try. There was great excitement when Sharpe intercepted a pass in Southland’s twenty-fiive and made a great rutii to. past half-way .before turning infield and passing to a supporting player. The movement was taken to within a. few yards of the Canterbury 'line before. it was checked, but only monfentaril'y, for it was pressed home shortly afterwards when McKay scored near the posts, decides’ kick failed.
