NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Maecenas.”) The spring meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club will open on Saturday next. Some notes on the gathering will appear in to-morrow’s issue. * * *• * * Considering Silvermino had not raced since May last, his effort in the big sprint event at Wanganui was meritorious. With the advantage of the race the E'gmont-trained gelding will be hard to beat in coming engagements. * * * * * Last season Curtsey was a very brilliant filly, but was late in coming to hand, and in consequence was raced only in the late autumn. She won each of her two engagements and was then spelled. Curtsey has not been in training very long since that spell, and | this may tell against her over the seven l'urlongs of the Champion Plate at Avondale next Saturday. If anything like herself. Curtsey at 7.12 would be next to a certainty. *'* * * Royal Acre has not been in work a great time, hut in spite of his lack of condition he ran two splendid races at Wanganui last week. Possibly he does best on a. light preparation, but in a hard struggle lack of condition must tell. As hurdlers are not plentiful at j present, Royal Acre should secure some [ money this season, j » * * * Te Atiawa is regarded by some as not reliable, but his form during the last few months has been the model of consistency. He went two good races in his Wanganui engagements, but met .something just too good at the weights. * * * * * By an oversight on the part of her connections the Australian-bred two-' year-old Korokio was not entered for the Avondale Staes or Welcome Stakes that come up for decision at Ellerslie next month. Korokio may be taken to Ellerslie for the handicap races. In some of her races last season Lady Pam showed exceptional speed. She came in for good support in the i'lying Handicap at Wanganui last Thursday, hut never looked dangerous That such was not her true form Lady ram showed when, after being left several lengths at the start of the Jtclip.se Stakes, she put in a run is. the straight that threatened to beat these great gallopers Laughing Prince and Toxeuma. J.ady Pam will make her next public appearance at Hastings on Saturday week. Old Voma surprised the majority by his bold showings at the recent meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club. On both days lie finished just' behind the .placed division, and finished better I than any of liis opponents. Yoma appeared to pull up lame on Saturday, but later was walking quite sound. As he is now eleven years, Yoma’s days I of usefulness must he coming to a close. With an unknown apprentice on top Pomp ran so well last Thursday that many looked on him as a certainty at Wanganui on Saturday. Despite the fact that H. Cray was in the saddle, Pomp got into more trouble in bis second effort, for after losing many lengths at the start lie showed sufficient speed to bold a good chance at the home turn, hilt lie ran wide, and even then was right up at the finish. This form is worth noting. Although the total isa tor figures slumped badly at Wanganui last week I they were actually better than the responsible officials of the club anticipated. B.v winning four Eclipse Stakes in succession Laughing Prince has put up

a feat that will take some beating. His condition last week was a credit to the young trainer L. G. Morris. * * * * The connections of Fernden quite expected the Australian-bred gelding to win at least once at Wanganui last week, but fate decreed otherwise. On the first day Fernden met with interference, but it did not affect tile- result. and on the second day the gelding was running just behind Accra at the straight entrance when a stirrup leather broke and Jiis -rider (11. Gray) all but came off. This completely extinguished whatever chance i'ermlen possessed. + Those- that notic'd Para too in the Wanganui Guineas last Thursday were quite prepared to see him run a solid race amongst the hacks on Saturday. Paratoo jumped away from the barrier well, but was immediately sent back, and at the .straight entrance be was in an impossible position. Over the last furlong the field spread out. and an opening appearing Paratoo was sent through, but too late to allow him to win, though the effort was a. particularly line one. Unfortunately, Paratoo was cut about in the scramble and will have to miss immediate meetings, but will do well later.
