EXPENSES IN LONDON

COMMISSIONER’S OFFICE

NEED FOR. 01IEESE-P ARING-

The need for reducing expenditure in connection ■ with tho office of the High' Commissioner in London was mentioned by Mr H. 'G. Dickie i(Bef., Patea), during discussion of the Internal Affairs Department in the House of Bepresenta'tives yesterday. Mr Dickie said the Government had undertaken economies in many directions, but no effort had been made to cut down the expenses of the High Commissioner's office. He drew special attention to the salary of £9OO of the emigration: officer. The Government had practically stopped immigration, and yet this officer was being paid a high salary for iwhat. must be very little work.

“We should do some cheese-paring in this office,'' said Mr Dickie. “It is notable that the Australian office has cut down it® expenses by £30,000 a year. Wo certainly do not need a large staff to deal with migration at the present moment. This is one matter that could bo well attended to."
