HAAVERA CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD

At the annual meeting of the Hawera Amateur Athletic Association was held last- evening, Air. L. H. Clapham presiding. "The committee is pleased to report that the. club has had another very successful season,” stated the annual report. "Financially the- club is in a much better position than at the end of the previous season, due largely to the number of honorary members’ tickets sold and to the profit- from the annual ball. The following particulars of finance, .since the club's inception give further indication of the popularitv of the sport for which the club caters: 1921, £43; 1922, £2B; 1923. £54; 1924, £25; 1925, £24; 1926, £65; 1927, £B3; 1928. £7; 1929, £3l; 1930, £73.

"At the end fa the 1928-29 season the committee guaranteed £3O to the N.Z.A.A.A. to secure a visit of Canadian athletes to compete at Hawera, with whom the New Zealand Council were endeavouring to make arrangements to tour New Zealand, but owing to unforeseen circumstances the athletes were unable to make the trip. Similar application was made for a visit to Hawera of the. Australian athletes —Golding and Le'nnond —hut, unfortunately, the committee regret they were unable to secure- a date for these athletes to visit Hawera. During the season a number of reinstatements were granted by the N.Z.A.A.A. and two new amateur athletic clubs, namely, Stratford and Eltham. were formed in Taranaki and affiliated to the N.Z.A.A.A., and we wish to congratulate these clubs on the progress they have made. The club is to be eongratulated on the success of the numerous meetings which it conducted i during the season'. There were 10 evening meetings, one electric light carnival, the AVanganni-Taranaki championships and four cycle road races, a total of L'lG, which is considered a notable performance, if not a record tor anv club in the Dominion, and gives additional indication of the popularity of the sport for which the club caters. ‘‘The outstanding event of the. .season so far as the club was concerned was the AAVinganui-Taranaki championship meeting, admirably carried out under the auspices of the club. It is very pleasing to record that the club was again successful in winning the championship banner. “To Misses V. Allen, E. Toy, Messrs A. Hart, A. Pollock, S. A. Lay, E. K. Cambio, L. Hunt, I). AVills, L. A. Xewall. and H. J. (”. Kelson we extend congratulations on their selection to represent the centre at the New Zealand ohanypionships, also Messrs A. Grant and C. Dahl on their appointment as judges at the same meeting. All did remarkably well, S. A. Lay winning the javelin championship, D. AA'ills the three-mile walk championship, L. A. Newall second in the 120 hurdles championship, while L. Hunt gained second and third placing® in throwing the discus and hammer championships respectively. The thanks of the club are due to Air. A. Coleman, of Eltham, for his kindness in donating a challenge cup for competition in tlie. walking events. The cup will in future be known as the Coleman Cup. The committee wishes to place on record the fact- of S. A. Lay being selected to represent New Zealand at the British Empire Games held at Hamilton, Canada, and his pertonnj anees in winning the British Empire championship javelin throw and also with the British team at Chicago. “The points prize competitions conducted during the season resulted as follows: Burdekin Cup (for track events), A. Kelson (dead heat); High School trophy (for secondary schoolboys), A. Gray; relay race medals (for primary schools teams), Tawhiti School; Labour Day challenge •ii | > (for most points, excluding cycling), AL Prince; Labour Day challenge cup (for most points in cycling), A. Kennedy. “The committee wish to thank all | those who rendered assistance to the: club in carrying out. its various sports meetings, dances, and administrative business; to the Press for its valued assistance; to Mr. B. AV. H. Smart for auditing the club’s hooks; to Mr. A. Coleman, of Eltham, for his handsome donation; the Boy Scouts; honorary gatekeepers, and the Egmont- A. and D. The AA’anganr.i-Taranaki Centre advised that the itinerary of the proposed tour of Simpson and Bullwinkie, the American athletes, Intel been altered and they would now appear at AYanganui on February 11, Hawera on February 18, and again at AVanganui on .March 18.

As an appreciation of bis past services the secretary was granted an honorarium of £5 ss. Mr. Reece’s renewal of his- offer to do any necessary sign work for the club free of charge was accepted with thanks.
