BRITISH SHIPBUILDERS

CULLING METHODS IN USE

ELIMINATION OF WASTE

CONFERENCE ON INDUSTRY

.Llniu-u cress Association -B> Electric T-legrupn LONDON, Sept. 11. A conference or employers anil workers in the shipbuilding industry has been summoned to consider tlie position created by the operations ot National shipbuilders' Security, Util.

The question of the iuture oi displaced worners has been raised by the prospect oi the aoandonment at the end of the year of Heard more’s shipbuilding yard at Dalmuir, in which the staff at present is only 000, though 6600 were employed during war-time. Negotiations have been advanced for closing another yard on the west coast of Scotland and also one on the east coast of England. A similar process of weeding-out is being pursued in other industries, it is argued that although this may involve some unemployment and hardship at present, it wiil lead to extended •employment when efficiency and the elimination of waste have promoted increased productivity.
