A shrivelled, blackened body was discovered dangling from a high-tension cable on the Paris-Orleans railway. The victim proved to be a soldier named Simon, for whom the police searched owing to the murder of a taxi-driver. Simon left a letter admitting the crime and then climbed a pole, preferring electrocution to the guillotine.
